Mauritania Assumes Rotating Presidency of Permanent Representatives to the League of Arab States

The 161st session of the Council of the League of Arab States at the delegate level began on Monday at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States in Cairo, where HE Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania in Cairo and Permanent Representative to the League of Arab States received the presidency of the session from his Moroccan counterpart, Chairman of the previous session.

The current session of the meeting of permanent representatives comes in preparation for the meeting of Arab foreign ministers, scheduled to meet at the headquarters of the League on Wednesday under the chairmanship of His Excellency the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Mauritanians Abroad, Mohamed Salem Ould Merzouk.

In a speech on the occasion, HE the Ambassador expressed his pride and pleasure at Mauritania’s chairmanship of the 161st session of the Council of the League of Arab States at the delegate level, stressing the need to redouble efforts to make a collective workshop a success within the framework of our Arab home to serve the common higher interests of our Arab countries and peoples.

He congratulated His Excellency Mohamed Ait Ouali, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Morocco, for the efforts made by Morocco that contributed to the success of the previous session.

He said that the situation in Gaza continues to impose itself on the agenda of the meetings of the League of Arab States, as the Israeli aggression continues at the same pace as the indiscriminate killing of unarmed civilians, including children, women and the elderly, and the perpetration of heinous massacres, recalling in this context the massacre of the Nabulsi roundabout in the northern Gaza Strip and the systematic destruction, forced displacement and the practice of oppression and siege on our people in the occupied Palestinian territories, in a campaign of extermination contrary to all universal values and laws.

He warned that this aggression is taking place in full view of the world and the international community without moving a finger to stop the crimes of genocide against this steadfast people in Gaza.

He called for redoubling and unifying efforts to put the international community before its moral and legal responsibilities in order to provide protection for the Palestinian people, return the displaced to their homes, oblige Israel to stop its crimes against the Palestinian people, stop its unjust aggression on the Gaza Strip and lift the siege on it, and open the way for a sustainable political solution that guarantees the Palestinian people all their legitimate rights, foremost of which is the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the borders of the fourth of June 1967, with Jerusalem as its capital.

He also pointed to the regional and international challenges that the region is going through, and the redoubled effort that this requires to develop opinions and perceptions that serve our common Arab interests, hoping that Mauritania’s presidency of this session will contribute to laying another building block in building the unified Arab edifice, and that it will constitute a step in addition to what was done before by the brothers and brothers of significant and appreciated efforts in this field.

He stressed our country’s readiness to deal positively with all the topics under discussion, in the service of the process of joint Arab action, and to cooperate with the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States, and in coordination with the permanent representatives in order to follow up on the achievements made, with the aim of developing mechanisms for joint Arab action, in line with the directives of the leaders of the need to work to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and cooperation between our countries, and to achieve the aspirations of our Arab peoples, who deserve to live in prosperity and security.

He reviewed the topics that should take a large part of the discussion, including good preparation for the 33rd session of the Arab Summit in Bahrain, and the fifth session of the Arab Economic and Social Development Summit in Nouakchott.

He also warned not to neglect the work to activate and activate the open-ended committee on the file of reform and development of the organs of the Arab League, and its four working groups.
